College of Nurses of Ontario
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body for the 145,000 registered nurses (RNs), registered practical nurses (RPNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in Ontario, Canada.The College regulates nursing to protect the public interest and sets requirements to enter the profession, establishes and enforces standards of nursing practice, and assures the quality of practice of the profession and the continuing competence of nurses.
The nursing profession has been self-regulating in Ontario since 1963. The College works in partnership with employers, educators and government so that everyone in Ontario benefits from quality nursing services.
Ontario College of Pharmacists
Established in 1871, The Ontario College of Pharmacists licenses and regulates all Ontario pharmacists and community pharmacies. Pharmacy, as a self-regulated profession, is one of over 20 health professions in Ontario regulated by its College, which was established to oversee the profession under the Regulated Health Professions Act. The College's primary role is to set and enforce the operational standards for community pharmacies, to ensure pharmacists continue to provide Ontarians with high quality, ethical pharmaceutical care.
The Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) is the registering and regulating body for pharmacy practice in Ontario. All persons within Ontario who wish to dispense prescriptions and sell products defined as drugs to the public must first have met the professional qualifications set by the College, and be registered as a pharmacist. Likewise, all pharmacies must meet certain standards for operations and be accredited by the College. In addition to setting initial standards, the College ensures ongoing adherence to the professional and operational standards.
College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario is the registering and regulating body for physiotherapy. The College regulates the profession under the authority of the Regulated Health Professions Act, and the Physiotherapy Act so that the College may serve and protect the public interest in Ontario. Under the authority of the Regulated Health Professions Act and the Physiotherapy Act, the College develops regulations and by-laws, sets standards for entry into the profession, requires physiotherapists to register prior to practising, drafts rules that physiotherapists must follow, and develops programs to enhance the practice of physiotherapists in Ontario. It also demonstrates accountability to the public by investigating complaints.
College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
The College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO) regulates the profession of respiratory therapy in Ontario. The CRTO is one of 25 self-governing health Colleges established by law. The CRTO is dedicated to supporting Respiratory Therapists in their delivery of high quality, safe and ethical care to the public of Ontario.
The profession is regulated by setting out entry to practice requirements, standards and competencies for the practice of the profession, a government-mandated quality assurance program, and investigating concerns about Members, including, where necessary, carrying out disciplinary action against Members who fail to meet the standards of the profession.
College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario
The College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario is the registering and regulating body for audiology and speech-language pathology in Ontario under the authority of the Regulated Health Professions Act (1991) and the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Act 1991. The College establishes and maintains standards of knowledge, practice and ethics in its members to ensure quality service to the public.
Pharmacy Technicians of Ontario
The Health Systems Improvement Act, 2007 (Bill 171) was passed by the Ontario Legislature on June 4, 2007. This Act, which amends the Regulated Health Professions Act, the Pharmacy Act and Drug and Pharmacy Regulation Act as well as many other health profession acts, enables the regulation of pharmacy technicians. The Regulation of Pharmacy Technicians allows for the support of pharmacists in the provision of more comprehensive patient care services and promotion of optimal pharmacy services for the public.
There are many components to the regulation initiative. The College of Pharmacists has been working with SkilSure to provide an on line solution to provide quality assurance and support regulation of the new profession. The solution goes live in January 2010.
College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario
The College regulates the profession under the authority of the Regulated Health Professions Act, and the Dental Hygiene Act so that the College may serve and protect the public interest in Ontario. College of Dietitians of BC
The College of Dietitians of British Columbia was established on November 2, 2002 under the BC Health Professions Act through enactment of the Dietitians Regulation. Bylaws for the College were approved in 2003 and in April 2004 the College became the legal authority for the regulation of dietitians in British Columbia. The College's Mission Statement is: Under the provisions of the Health Professions Act, the mission of the College of Dietitians of British Columbia is to ensure protection of the public by establishing, monitoring and enforcing competent, safe and ethical dietetic practice.
