SEMTA becomes the first Sector Skills Council to pilot an e-Apprentice solution

LONDON, UK. October 18, 2005 – SEMTA today agreed to become the first Sector Skills Council to pilot a new on-line solution called e-Apprentice. This is set to benefit hundreds of higher apprentices in engineering and the programme delivery organisations, assessor organisations, and others who will manage and monitor their development.

SEMTA has joined forces with SkilSure Limited (SkilSure®), which creates web based development management solutions for Institutions, Sector Skills Councils, and Companies, to create a customised solution for its pilot launch of the Higher Apprentice Scheme. This is a historic move for SEMTA. The Higher Apprentice Scheme will be launched on October 14 and the e-Apprentice solution will be an integral part of the offering.

SEMTA is the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies. SEMTA covers 76.000 engineering and manufacturing companies employing 2,000,000 people in the United Kingdom. SEMTA is working closely with its Sector Strategy Groups to drive improvements in productivity by transforming skills across the sector.

Three sub-sectors Aerospace, Automotive, and Electronics have identified a critical need for technicians and engineers over the next ten years. It is in response to this need that SEMTA has moved to develop the Higher Apprentice Framework. The Higher Apprentice Framework will improve the supply of young people seeking to enter work based learning via apprenticeships by offering structured high value learning and transferable skills/knowledge with professional Engineering Technician or Incorporated Engineer registration. The contribution of a range of partners in the development of the Higher Apprentice Framework will keep it relevant. However such is the range of partners and collaborators that an internet based solution is required to manage their roles, transactions and interactions in implementing the Higher Apprentice Framework.

The e-Apprentice solution will remove the need for paper based reports and records for both apprentices and their employers. E-Apprentice is a customised version of the SkilSure® application and provides a secure on-line method of record keeping (including personal e-Portfolios) for all Higher Engineering Apprentices.

Apprentices will be able to monitor their progress on line. The e-Apprentice solution records Higher Apprentices' plans and objectives, and allows them to submit evidence to the relevant party to support their achievement of competence in accordance with the standards required. Reports and assessments including mentor, assessor and supervisor comments are recorded and stored along with supporting evidence, plans, and progress indicators in each Higher Apprentice's portfolio.

Additional e-Apprentice benefits include supporting the higher apprentices with on-line access 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

SkilSure Limited has a legacy of more than 15 years as a provider of customised development and Competence Assurance packages. The SkilSure® solution is a tried and tested solution that has been developed and tested in practice over a ten year period. Users of SkilSure® and related products in North America and Europe include Miller Brewing Company, MeadWestvaco, Weyerhaeuser Corporation, Alstom, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, SkillSmart Retail Sector Skills Council and E.ON.
